ITE provision in minority language contexts

Abstract Within the broader contexts of language maintenance, revitalisation and use, schools have an important role to play in early transmission minority or minoritized languages. Through effective classroom-based practices, teachers can offer rich, continuous linguistic experiences for young people they teach that lead long-term, sustained engagement with over time. How a given approach practice may be delivering outcome different depends large extent on skills competence teacher involved ( Fitzpatrick et al., 2018 , p. 59), are usually rooted their as student teachers. Initial education (ITE) programmes therefore central delivery practices fundamental generating autonomous who explore critically pedagogical approaches pertain contexts. This paper provides comparative overview current issues challenges facing ITE primary two distinct settings, namely Wales Ireland. Both settings provide Welsh-medium Irish-medium immersion education, well English-medium offering Welsh Irish statutory subjects up age 16. also through medium Irish, catering specifically those wishing settings. face number shared terms content, design programme context. We highlight areas which resources methodologies could amongst all where maintenance is key component education.
